Common questions

Who runs ARS Rates?

ARS Rates was built by an expat in Buenos Aires who got tired of checking five sites before changing money. It is independent and free: it isn't affiliated with any bank, exchange house, card network or money-transfer company. Rates are for information only and may differ from what providers charge.

What is the dólar blue?

The dólar blue is Argentina's informal market rate for cash US dollars, set by street exchange houses (cuevas). It is shown as buy (what you get when you sell dollars) and sell (what you pay to buy them), and it usually differs from the official bank rate.

What is the best way to get pesos with US dollars?

Exchange US dollar bills at a reputable exchange house (casa de cambio) that publishes its rates, such as Cambio Baires (we list the licensed ones near you). Bring $100 bills in the current design (with the blue security ribbon): older designs get a lower rate. Smaller Western Union branches that buy dollars are the next option. Use ATMs or the street changers on Florida Street only as a last resort: ATMs have low limits and high fees, and street changers risk fake bills and poor rates. See the Money Guide for more.

Is the Visa rate the same as the MEP rate?

No. Visa's daily rate follows the previous day's dólar MEP, but it has run roughly 5-7% below MEP during 2026. Mastercard matches Visa on weekdays.

What exchange rate does American Express use in Argentina?

AMEX converts peso charges at the Central Bank's wholesale reference rate (Comunicación A 3500) from two business days before the charge, with no markup. The charge shows its final dollar amount right away; AMEX used to charge at the official rate and refund the difference later, but no longer does. In our checks against real charges it was typically within 0.1%, and it gives about 4-5% more pesos per dollar than Visa or Mastercard.

How often are the rates updated?

Market and money-transfer rates are checked every 15 minutes from 7:00 to 21:00 Argentina time, and hourly overnight. Visa, Mastercard and AMEX each set one rate per day that applies to all card charges that day, so those change once a day rather than during the day.
